USCIS Announces Six Additional Months for Haitian Nationals to Seek Temporary Protected Status
Jennifer L. Manning, August 4, 2010
USCIS declared an extension to the registration period for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for eligible Haiti nationals. The updated registration period is now from January 21, 2010 through January 18, 2011.
Haitian nationals eligible for the extension are those who have continuously resided in the US since Jan 12, 2010; TPS does not apply to Haitians who first entered the US after January 12, 2010.
TPS registration permits qualifying Haitians to continue residing in the US and to acquire work authorization for the program's duration.
Though the extension of the registration period allows more time for individuals to prepare their applications, USCIS strongly encourages eligible individuals to register as soon as possible within the new registration period. To avoid the application's rejection, applicants must ensure they timely submit the required applications and fees, or a properly documented fee waiver request.
