Refugees and Asylees Have the Right to Work
Jennifer L. Manning, May 3, 2010
The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices, recently issued a publication for employers and employees on information about refugees and asylees having the right to work in the United States.
It describes how refugees and asylees are authorized to work indefinitely in the United States because of their status. "Refugee and asylum status may be granted to people who have been persecuted or fear they may be persecuted on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion."
The publication sets for a list of guidelines employers should follow when accepting proof of work authorization documents from refugees and asylees. Also included in the publication is information that refugees and asylees should know about working in the United States. For example, even if there is a delay in obtaining a Social Security number, refugees and asylees may still begin working and cannot be refused from being hired simply because they do not yet have a Social Security number.
