Adopting a “Peace Perspective”
Bunmi Awoniyi, September 3, 2010
A divorce mediator-attorney quite often must release Pandora's Box of painful emotions, shattered dreams, and broken promises. This is not meant to supply either party with ammunition to humiliate the other. Rather, this process is necessary to remind both parties to embrace a wide perspective of the situation: a peace perspective.
This "peace perspective" requires us to sift through the chaos and judgment that too often accompany pain. Then, we are better able to discern whether we want to wage a chaotic war or negotiate toward a more precise, peaceful arrangement. Then, we are better able to accept that "doing what is best" means compromising for what is best. Then ,we are better able to reject those petty urges provoked by our pain. Then, we are better able to determine who we truly want to be when all is said and done.
